From The Mind Of Frank Miller, To Inspiration For Christopher Nolan

If you are a hardcore Batman follower in all of his media forms, then the mere mention of writer Frank Miller (Sin City) should instantly bring about feelings of admiration. During the 1980's, the hard-boiled scribe was instrumental in defining a no-nonsense, mature version of the Dark Knight that we all love to this day with tales like The Dark Knight Returns, and Batman: Year One. In fact his work has served as inspiration for director Christopher Nolan's imagining of the Caped Crusader in his film trilogy of 2005's Batman Begins, 2008's The Dark Knight, and 2012's upcoming The Dark Knight Rises.

Batman: Year One - The Movie

So it's no surprise that Batman: Year One would be adapted into an animated feature by the same creative team that took Batman to great heights in the 1990's with Batman: The Animated Series. Set during the inaugural year that Bruce Wayne picked up the mantle of the hero, Year One follows Wayne's process in discovering the ups, downs, and learning curves of becoming Batman while trying to handle a police corruption ring that also involves one Lt. James Gordon (before his ascension to police Comissioner). Released on October 18, 2011 (simultaneously with the new video game Batman: Arkham City), the Blu-ray/DVD combo offers up the tale with a pack of special features, but does it work as well on screen as it does in the comic book pages?
