Digital Television Broadcasting

Man's quest for high quality television signals has fueled the development of today's modern cable television systems. Beginning in 1948, communities out of the primary coverage area for adequate television reception erected large towers with a variety of antenna on top to service the needs of it's residents. These Community Antenna TV systems (CATV) were the pioneers that roped the distant signals for all connected to enjoy.

From this effort modern cable systems developed, delivering not only local channels but programming and networks not available via broadcast. This was soon supplemented by satellite delivery of signals, with an upfront cost to deploy the satellites but saving the expense of building the labor intensive infrastructure of wiring a community. These companies regardless of the method of delivery, were able to charge for this service.
