The small changes in Word 2010 are an attempt to make the 2007 version with the Ribbon more user friendly. In Word 2007, Excel 2007, and PowerPoint 2007, according to Microsoft, they made the "most significant update" of the Office Suite in a decade. They instituted the "Fluent User Interface" which equates to adding the Ribbon across the top. After being trained for decades to use the menus, all of the function icons were placed on the Ribbon; most users were not too happy to make the change.

The New File Tab

The Office Button that arrived with Word 2007 is now gone and the File Tab is its replacement. The functionality of the File Tab is now called the Backstage View. According to Word 2010 Help documentation, “the Backstage View is where you manage your files and the data about them – creating, saving inspecting for hidden metadata or personal information, and setting options.”

The functionality of the File Tab includes Save, Save As, Open, Close, Info, Recent, New, Print, Share, Help, Options, and Exit. The Info function includes Convert (if the document is in the 1997-2003 document format), Permissions, Prepare for Sharing, and Manage Versions. The Print function replaces the old Print dialog box with all the functions on one pane with the nice addition of instant Print Preview.
